New Bags, New Beginnings

Binodpur, South 24 Parganas

Society members handing a new school bag to a student at a community event

At the start of the school year, children from our villages lined up for something many had never owned: a brand-new school bag of their own.

For a child in the Sundarbans, the walk to school can be long, and books are often carried in a plastic bag or tucked under an arm. A proper school bag sounds like a small thing. For many of the children we met, it was the first one they had ever owned.

Before the new academic year, our volunteers set out rows of bags in the community hall. Children sat on mats with their parents, waited for their names to be called and walked up to collect a bag of their own.

We hope a bag that keeps books dry and safe is one more reason to keep going to school. The society will continue to support these students with study materials throughout the year.

A small gift today can be the reason a child stays in school tomorrow.
