A Hot Meal by the River

Sundarban riverside

Volunteers serving hot khichuri from large pots on a river embankment

Large pots of khichuri, cooked by volunteers and served on the river embankment, brought a warm meal to everyone who came.

Some of the families we serve live along the river embankments, where work depends on the tides and the season. On many days a full, hot meal is not guaranteed.

Our volunteers cooked large pots of khichuri and carried them to the embankment. People queued patiently with their own plates and containers, and the volunteers kept serving until everyone had eaten.

Community meals like this are simple, but they bring people together and make sure that no one in the village goes hungry that day.

This story is part of our Food & Essential Support programme.

  • People lining up along an embankment for a community meal
Together, one meal at a time.
  • A volunteer ladling food from a pot while others wait
    Food shared is joy shared.
